Also known as interceptive orthodontics,  address orthodontic issues in children at a younger age, typically before all permanent teeth have erupted. The goal is to guide the growth and development of the jaws, create space for incoming permanent teeth, and correct any bite problems or alignment issues early on. Here are some key points about early treatment orthodontics:

  • Timing: Early treatment usually occurs between the ages of 7 and 11 when a child still has a mix of primary (baby) and permanent teeth.
  • Issues Addressed:  crowding or misaligned teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and issues with jaw growth.
  • Benefits:
  • Prevention: Early treatment can prevent the worsening of orthodontic problems and reduce the severity of future issues.
  • Easier Treatment: Addressing issues early may make future orthodontic treatment more straightforward and shorter.
  • Improved Facial Harmony: Guiding jaw growth can contribute to better facial aesthetics.
  • Types of Appliances:
  • Space Maintainers: Used to preserve space for permanent teeth if primary teeth are lost early.
  • Palatal Expanders: Expand the upper jaw to correct cross-bites or create space for crowded teeth.
  • Partial Braces: Target specific teeth for alignment.
  • Assessment: An orthodontist will assess a child's dental and facial development to determine if early treatment is necessary.

Not all children require early orthodontic treatment. Some orthodontic issues may be addressed more effectively when all permanent teeth have erupted.
